SHEDS Showroom

Description of SHEDS

The Swiss Household Energy Demand Survey (SHEDS) has been developed as part of the research agenda of CREST. It is designed to collect a comprehensive description of the Swiss households’ energy‐related behaviors, their longitudinal changes and the existing potentials for future energy demand reduction. Data were collected during five annual waves (2016-2020), thus generating a rolling panel dataset of 5,000 respondents per wave.

SHEDS Showroom

The SHEDS Showroom offers a series of dynamic illustrations based on the data collected in the survey. These illustrations display aspects of energy-related behavior of households in the domains of heating, electricity and mobility at the canton-level in Switzerland and their evolution over the years 2016-2019. Following information are shown when hovering on the map or clicking on specific cantons:

  • Heating: the share of non-renewable heating systems (oil, gas, district heating and other) and details about the distribution of heating systems in each canton;
  • Electricity: median electricity consumption in kWh per person and per year as well as percentage of respondents who do not know how much electricity they consume;
  • Mobility: the share of private mobility (car or motorbike) and details on transport modes for work commute.

Please note that the data might be subject to uncertainty due to small number of respondents in some cantons.
