The Evolution of Mobility - A Socio-Economic Analysis

More than 38% of final energy use and about 40% of Switzerland’s CO2-emissions are related to mobility and transportation. Furthermore, mobility is one of the few sectors where energy use and CO2 emission still increase (all data from BFS, 2016). Thus, mobility is of central importance to the Swiss energy transition and to climate policy. Substantial research on future mobility systems is underway, focusing mostly on new or more efficient ways to meet an increasing demand for mobility. While SCCER Mobility and SCCER CREST already focus on selected demand issues, this joint activity will combine detailed knowledge about technical options and their implication for the energy system with a sound understanding of mobility behavior and its social and economic determinants in a systematic way.

This joint activity of SCCER Mobility and SCCER CREST brings together the competences of both SCCERs to meet the following objectives:

1. Developing approaches to reduce mobility-related household energy demand, covering conventional incentive-based approaches (e.g. taxes), social determinants, and information-based measures.
2. Developing coherent scenarios for a future Swiss mobility system, including an assessment of the energy and CO2 impact of mobility scenarios as well as information which policy measures would be required to make different scenarios more likely.
3. Using 1-2 field experiments to test the impact of programs that use “soft measures”, such as information regarding lifetime costs, policy measures, or environmental impacts.

The work of this joint activity will be conducted in three interacting work streams:
